Baby's First Book of Atomic Bombs Stephen Goss, Natalie Totire 9781494499624 Books Reviews
Stumbled onto this while searching for science books for toddlers. Who can resist such a title? Borrowed it on Prime.
This book certainly has an agenda. An Air Force bomber accidentally drops a bomb and nukes a forest complete with cute deer and bunnies. Congressional investigation is nothing more than CYA. The end.
The explosion in the forest wasn't even a mushroom cloud, just a big boom. Now, I can forgive the author being generally against nuclear weapons, but not using the subject's most distinguishable feature for anything except the cover is beyond the pale!
However, the author's explanation of the physics behind the bomb in the beginning of the book is actually pretty good. Also, the book's dedication hopes for a world without nuclear weapons, except for perhaps defending the planet against asteroids. Call me sentimental if you must, I thought that caveat was very mature!
I did not buy it. I couldn't get past the books politics. Why 4 stars? I'm not the target audience. If you're against atom bombs and want to get your kids started early, this is the gold standard! It fits the disarmament agenda, but will also teach a little science and hedge just a bit that nukes may not be entirely bad if they aren't pointed at other people. Fair enough!
Good, short book for baby. Good black and white pictures (in Paperwhite, real book may be in color). Adults interested enough to read it to their kids will get a kick out of the humor. One star off for, again, no mushroom cloud in story.
Hats off to the author who would dare write a baby book on the subject, even though it seems abundantly clear he had a good time writing it.
This is a great book for children of all years. Shows the easy steps one needs to learn more about atomic bombs, and the dangers with them.
